What is JDRF JDRF's mission is "to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research." Since its inception in 1970, JDRF has led the way to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. It raises more funds for juvenile diabetes research than any other charitable organization in the world. JDRF also dictates the agenda for diabetes research with five cure therapeutic goals: replacement, complications, autoimmunity, control and regeneration. Together, these goals provide the greatest insight into finding treatments and cures. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. It affects both children and adults, and the onset can be quick and fatal. Individuals with diabetes must closely monitor their blood sugar to avoid complications. In order to do this, diabetics must either administer insulin injections to themselves or use a pump. There are no alternatives and there is no rest - the same procedures must be followed day after day, year after year. Regardless of vigilance, nothing can prevent the ultimate physical effects of diabetes, including amputation, kidney failure, stroke, heart disease and blindness. JDRF awards millions of dollars every year to individuals and institutions working to eliminate diabetes and its devastating effects. In total, JDRF has raised more than $1.3 billion to fund diabetes research. In 2008 alone, the JDRF awarded $156 million to more than 1,000 laboratories, hospitals, and industries, and granted fellowships in 22 countries. Information furnished from www.JDRF.org |
